The winning idea

BLIPS is a set of lenses for smartphone developed by Smart Micro Optics and Atellani within the neuroscience labs of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT). It incorporates patent pending technology and sophisticated design in a simple product. The BLIPS Macro lens is only 0.5mm thin, but offers optical magnification of about 10x. Its working distance is about 1/2-inch (12mm) and it works a lot like adding a laser pointer lens to your smartphone, only at much higher quality. BLIPS Micro is able to detect details of about 1/7000 inch (≈1/300 mm), distinguishing single cells or other inhabitants of the micro-world. [It] is less than 1/20 inch (~1.2mm) thick, and turns your phone into an actual digital microscope. You need to keep a distance of ¼ inch (6mm) between the lens and the sample under observation to discover tiny details at a high definition. With the use of the digital zoom it’s possible to achieve magnification of over 100x.

Blips

Blips comes in two versions: macro, for very close shots and micro for a real microscopic experience.

Campaign strategy

The starting point was a perfectly functioning product, already tested and engineered, but in need of brand strategy and structured market vision. A dedicated team of designers managed brand and visual communication, naming process included. We worked on BLIPS development tailoring solutions for each specific kit:, The Basic Kit and the Lab Kit. This way, we were able to optimize the product for the Kickstarter market, diversifying the rewards and facilitating the production.

The execution of the crowdfunding campaign included not only the rewards strategy, but the creation of all contents for press, website and campaign. Once the campaign was over, we took care of the logistics and shipment of the product to its community of backers, helping them from the early stages until the final delivery of BLIPS.

Results

BLIPS was 1457% funded from its original goal and is considered the most funded ultra portable lens product  for smartphones and tablets on Kickstarter to date. Almost 5.000 backers supported the project through the platform and more than 8.000 pieces have been sold. It has also been featured on most US news networks, such as CBS, FOX, ABC, NBC and published in many relevant blogs and on-line magazines including THE VERGE, GIZMODO, INTERESTING ENGINEERING, LAUGHING SQUEED, GIZMAG, WIRED and many more.

“This really is one of the most convenient and fun ways to play around with a microscope. You’ll start thinking microscopically (...) making discoveries in the world at your fingertips.”

The Verge, James Vincent

“Despite their very tiny size, the lenses make some impressive optical promises. The Micro version seems truly impressive.”

Popular Photography, Stan Horaczek

“These Blips lenses are a different story: They attach to your smartphone like a piece of tape, and are slim enough to carry alongside your credit cards.”

Gizmodo, Andrew Liszewski
